Hi my full name is Garry Richard Bagnell.I was born on the 13th June 1967 in Crawley Hospital.
I am a married man and married to a beautiful women named Kim. We have a daughter whose name is Georgie. She was born on 21st April 2004.
I started Birdwatching in 1977, twitching (half-heartedly) in the South-east from 1992 and came to my senses in doing nationwide twitches from 1999.
Then decided in counting birds in Ireland in 2003. This is probably the best decision I have ever made. If you don't do Ireland, then you are missing out twitches that are much smaller, friendlier & cheaper than nearly every life twitch that occurs in the UK. Also this year I keenly tried to see as many birds as possible in Sussex. I managed to see 228.
In 2004, Nationwide twitches became less and less. So I turned my attention to local patch watching. Nigel Driver has had lots of success at Weir Wood over the years, so I decided to keep a Weir Wood list and get enthused about improving my list.
My main targets in Birding are the following:-
500 different bird species in the British Isles. (481 as at 31st Dec 07, UK400 taxonomy).
300 different bird species in Sussex.
(293 as at 31st Dec 07, UK400 taxonomy).
600 different bird species in the Western P.
(519 as at 31st Dec 07, NETFUGL taxonomy).
Lesser targets:-
1000 different bird species in the World.
(600 ish as at 31st Dec 07, UK400 taxonomy).
400 different bird species in the Southeast.
(335 as at 31st Dec 07, UK400 taxonomy).
200 different bird species at Weir Wood.
(142 as at 31st Dec 07, UK400 taxonomy).
Finding a BB rarity in Sussex.
Finding a BB rarity elsewhere.
Finding a first for Britain. (With global warming anything is possible).
Some of these targets I will not achieve until my daughter is much older, when I should have more free time to do General Birdwatching.
I must say a big thank you to many birders that know me but in particular a BIG thankyou to Lee Evans, Chris Heard & Ian Barnard
I first met Lee on 13th April 1996. He that day decided upon himself to organise the viewing of a difficult to see Spotted Crake at Tringfield Reservoir in Herts. The second time I met him was briefly Scillies in 1999. The third time was 21st January 2000, when he showed me a Lady Amerherst Pheasant in Woburn, Beds. Since then I have travelled with Lee on many twitches in the British Isles. Lee has explained the Birding scene and its charecters to me in colourful detail, which has been very helpful when deciding on what twitches to go for etc. Lee's enthusiasm for Birding/twitching has rubbed off on me and for that I am extremely grateful.
I met Chris through Lee on the 14th September 2001. This was the day we drove to Scotland for a Thick-billed Warbler on the Outer Skerries. Since that day, Chris and I have spoken about so many bird related matters. Chris is like an encylcopedia of Bird Trivia. He has helped me develop as a Birder/twitcher immensely.
Ian Barnard got me into my Sussex Listing and he is regular passenger in my car for National twitches. Ian is very enthusiastic in getting new birds in Britain, sometimes when I cannot be bothered to go, he normally has enough enthusiasm for me to change my mind and go.
I hope you enjoy my website. I just want it to provide a bit of inspiration and fun to all that read it.
Thanks for reading.
